Can You Rent Textbooks?

Having a daughter in college now I was appalled at the prices of her textbooks. You would think they were made of gold and to buy them would and does cost sometimes more than the tuition. And she wants to be a teacher, so there are no medical books or legal books to buy. Even when students use the PAL grants for buying their books, sometimes that doesn’t cover the price of the books.

Nowadays when you go online you will come across businesses that will rent text books to you. This will cut down the cost of college books by half or so they state. But before making that decision to rent books online, first figure out just what books will be needed, and if they are available online.

Many companies that are renting online text books do not charge shipping and handling which is very good because books are heavy. They will also pay for the return of the books once the student is done with them; as long as they are in good condition. Most of these companies have a large warehouse full of every book one would need, so some will boast they have every book you will need.

They also have a policy that a student can actually make a bit of money when returning their rented books. Go to a college book store and pay two hundred dollars for a book and then try and get at least half of that back at the end of the semester, not going to happen. You might get thirty dollars for it, if that. One nice thing about renting books online is most companies have a thirty day guarantee, if the student drops the class of it might be canceled, the student can get their money back from renting the book.

Once thing and it is probably the most important item is the student must take care of the rented books. They must send them back in as good as shape as when they got them or sometimes they might be rejected and the student will not get their money back. Or the company might accept the books back, but will charge the student for the damage.

When ordering the text books, be sure you have a clear understanding at what books are required, get the exact name, volume and author to be sure to get the right rental. A real great way to be sure you are getting the right book is to get the ISBN number, or the bar code of the book that will insure the proper book is being sent.

Rent Textbooks Online and Save Money

Every college student is looking for various ways to save money. To purchase textbooks, it can cost hundreds of dollars each semester for a book that you probably will not need once that class is completed. Unfortunately for me, I did not have the option to rent textbooks online when I went to college and I in turn missed out on a potentially huge savings and benefit.

Not only is the savings a key point, but also the convenience of shopping at home and not having to stand in lines at the bookstore after searching the store for the books you need. In a tough economy, every student should look for ways to save every dollar while still getting every textbook they need at a great savings. Online textbook rental is a very simple process, simply browse through the site and locate the books you need. Shipping and handling charges are often free and books can be delivered right to your home. Many companies also offer free return shipping once you have finished with the book.

Of course there is the occasion when you really like a certain textbook that is filled with tons of useful information that you would prefer not to have to return. If you decide you wish to keep one, or all of the books, many companies provide the option to purchase rather than return it. I know I have several books that I found valuable to keep, but for the most part, I have many textbooks in my bookshelf just taking up space and collecting dust. If I would have had the opportunity to rent textbooks rather than purchase them, I certainly would have.

I recently assisted a family member of mine in researching some of the websites that offer this service and I would like to share with you what I found out about various options that you have. Please visit my blog: http://my-favorite-reviews.blogspot.com for my recommendations.

Is It Better To Buy Or Rent Textbooks?

Renting textbooks has grown in popularity, but is it really the best bang for your buck? College students are always looking to save money, and buying textbooks for the fall and spring semesters is no exception. Textbooks cost college students a lot of money every year, and students are now looking to save money by renting them. Is it really the cost saving measure that everyone says it is? I have laid out a few examples to give students a clearer picture of how to save money on textbooks:

Textbook that a student needs for their semester:
Business by William M. Pride

If that student decides to rent Business by William M. Pride from Chegg.com they will be charged $60.49. They will also need to ship it back to Chegg by a certain date to avoid any fees charged to their account.

Now if that same student decides to buy a used copy of Business by William M. Pride from Amazon.com, they will have to pay about $90.00 plus $3.99 in shipping. This looks like it would cost the student more, but they can resell the book to MyBookCart.com for $41.30. The total spent by the student would be $52.69.

In this scenario, the student saves $7.8 by buying used and then reselling it instead of renting the textbook. This doesn’t include the money saved by avoiding late fees or any other fees charged by Chegg.com

Textbook that a student needs for their semester:
Accounting, Chapters 1-23, by Charles T. Horngren, 8th Edition

If that student decides to rent Accounting, Chapters 1-23 from Chegg.com, they will be charged $56.99. They will also need to ship it back to Chegg by a certain date to avoid any fees charged to their account.

Now if that same student decides to buy a used copy of Accounting, Chapters 1-23 from Amazon.com, they will have to pay about $75.00 plus $3.99 in shipping. This looks like it would cost the student more, but they can resell the book to MyBookCart.com for $34.25. The total spent by the student would be $44.74.

In this scenario, the student saves $12.25 by buying used and then reselling it instead of renting the textbook. This doesn’t include the money saved by avoiding late fees or any other fees charged by Chegg.com.

Textbook that a student needs for their semester:
Biology: Concepts and Connections, Eighth Ed. by Neil A. Campbell

If that student decides to rent Biology: Concepts and Connections from Chegg.com, they will be charged $53.99. They will also need to ship it back by its due date to Chegg to avoid any fees charged to their account.

Now if that same student decides to buy a used copy of Biology: Concepts and Connections from Amazon.com, they will have to pay about $75.00 plus $3.99 in shipping. This looks like it would cost the student more, but they can resell the book to MyBookCart.com for $34.25. The total spent by the student would be $44.74.

In this scenario, the student saves $9.25 by buying used and then reselling it instead of renting the textbook. This doesn’t include the money saved by avoiding late fees or any other fees charged by Chegg.com.

The best way for a student to save money on textbooks is to buy them used from Amazon’s Used Marketplace and then reselling the textbook to buyback companies such as MyBookCart.com. This way, the student saves more money than renting the book. There are no time frames or late fees students have to worry about at the end of each semester.

Why Rent Textbooks?

Why should one buy textbooks? This is the question so many students ask themselves these days. New textbooks not only cost so much, but they are also obsolete when the term is over. No one wants to use these books any more. Therefore, people have to find someone who can take these books from them. That is why, it is not worth to invest in new books if do not plan to use them in pursuing postgraduate studies. However, there are many advantages of having personal textbooks.

The first one is that you do not need to borrow books from someone when reports ought to be prepared. A person can always be on top of the class when he/she has his own textbook. He/she can even get excellent scores in quizzes. He/she can use the book as and when required rather than asking for it for someone college mate. There is no foolish reasoning as that you study so rarely, then why have a textbook. Renting a book is fine when you study just once in a year, during exams. In fact, so many students cannot actually get books for themselves. They cannot get money for these books and renting books seems fine to them.

Companies who sell these books desire to provide students with them. The companies want students to complete their education without any obstacles. Students have also realized that buying books is a necessity. You cannot learn much when you are not prepared to read. Just getting notes from someone at the end of the term to prepare the report is not the most desirable thing. Sometimes, not reading can reflect poorly on your grades when the report is not as detailed as it should be. You can become an intelligent kid in your class because you can study in your spare time, often enabling you to get ahead of the others.

College Textbook Rentals – How Much Can You Save by Renting Your College Textbooks?

Did you know that even during the last few years of recession in the United States college textbooks increased in price by about 25%? Because of this more and more people are seeking alternative means of finding those high-priced textbooks for a bargain. Many people are looking into college textbook rentals.

There are numerous textbook rental places online which offer discounts for renting textbooks. Many of these sites claim to result in savings of as much as 90% from what book stores charge for the same textbook. However, the amount of savings is very much dependent upon which textbooks you are renting and how long you will need to rent those books.

Medical textbooks and legal textbooks tend to be among the highest priced books to purchase or rent. If you shop around when looking into college textbook rentals, you’ll be able to find deals even on these types of texts.

The vast majority of the textbook rental companies charge a rental fee based on the length of time you want the book. Most of the time your options are for 30 days, 45 days, 60 days, one quarter, or one semester. The cheapest rental fee is for 30 days, but most students will need the textbook for a full semester.

Remember, the actual cost of the rental is dependent upon the purchase price of a new textbook so it varies from book to book. The vast majority of college textbook rentals seem to run around the $50 dollar mark until you get into graduate level texts which tend to be a little pricier — probably because there’s a smaller group of people needing these books.

Something else to look into with college textbook rentals is the cost of shipping and handling. Some of the rental companies will offer a discount when you place a large order. In this case, you and some friends might want to consider ordering all of your books from the same company together to take advantage of this opportunity.

Additionally, some of the companies have free return shipping and handling for larger orders or for orders returned prior to the due date. Most of the companies will ask you to return the books in the original box so you’ll want to hang onto that.

If you do decide to go with a company that does not provide free shipping and handling on returns, remember that the post office and UPS offer a media mail which is a lot cheaper than regular mail. Media mail is available only when shipping books or other papers.

You can definitely save money by renting your textbooks online. How much you save is dependent upon your area of study and which college textbook rentals company you opt to use.
